Council Passes City-Wide Ban

Galveston, Texas
January 14, 2010

Tonight the Galveston City Council voted to amend the city’s traffic code to prohibit electronic messaging while driving. The public may no longer use wireless communication devices to view, send, or compose an electronic message while operating a motor vehicle. This ban applies to all areas within the City limits including school zones.

The amended ordinance was brought forward by District 1 City Councilman Tarris Woods to address public safety concerns. The majority of Council members supported the amendment, with Council member Beeton casting the sole vote in opposition. Beeton expressed the desire to receive more public comment on the proposed amendment prior to voting.

Violating the ordinance is a misdemeanor offense punishable by a fine not exceeding $500. The new law goes into effect 10 days from the date of publication.
